The smartphone market is really getting into its stride in 2011, with many more manufacturers pumping out high-power dual core mobiles to up the ante as the year progresses and previous models look increasingly archaic. Here are some of the latest releases along with new mobiles which are visible on the horizon.

HTC Sensation

Many were expecting HTC’s first dual core smartphone to be sensational, so it is no surprise that the Sensation does its best to live up to its name.

Powered by a 1.2GHz processor, it does more than many other dual core mobiles to actually leverage more of its power. This is indicated by the new 3D effects visible when you scroll through the homescreens, along with the implementation of app launching from the lock screen and improved multitasking. Its unibody metal design is stylish without being as overwhelmingly impressive as the super-sleek Samsung Galaxy SII.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini

The original Xperia Mini and its Pro variant were surprise hits for Sony Ericsson, so a hardware and software update was inevitable.

The latest Mini and Mini Pro get larger 3 inch displays, 1GHz processors and the latest version of Android onboard, complete with more comprehensive integration for Facebook services. In addition they both boast 720p HD video capture, an unprecedented capability in devices of this size.

Motorola Droid 3

Recent leaks have given away vast swathes of information about the Droid 3, Motorola`s second dual core mobile after the formidable multifunctional Atrix. Full HD 1080p video capture is allegedly onboard, while the high res touchscreen from previous models is thought to be a sustained feature, alongside its slide-out QWERTY keypad for precision of typing. While the form factor is not changing drastically, the Droid 3`s popularity is perhaps best sustained by sticking to the winning formula of its predecessors.

BlackBerry Torch 2

The original BlackBerry Torch proved that Research in Motion (RIM) could get touchscreen handsets right and the Torch 2 has appeared in a number of snaps online showing that the manufacturer is committed to expanding this range. A 1.2 GHz processor is promised, giving it much more poke than the precursor, while version 7 of the BlackBerry operating system is likely to bring plenty of new features to the table.

Sony Ericsson Urshi

While the rest of the mobiles mentioned above have been high-end powerhouses, the details about the Sony Ericsson Urshi suggest that it will be a much more modest affair. A high res 3.2 inch display will be your window onto Android 2.3 and a single core 1GHz processor will allow it to remain competitive.

It should be clear that Android mobile phones are quickly dominating the market at all areas, with previous top dogs like the iPhone range faltering under Google`s constant assault. Of course with Nokia planning its first batch of Windows Phone 7 devices and with Apple getting ready to launch the fifth generation of the iPhone this could all change, but for now Android is the king of the smartphone world.

Orange is understood to be considering pulling the BlackBerry Bold from its line-up because of persistent problems with the device.Return rates are understood to have been uncharacteristically high, with consumers complaining of a number of issues, including dropped calls and poor reception.

Orange had similar problems with the device in October and decided to stop shipping it. It had hoped the issues had been ironed out with a batch of software fixes, but the Bold is still confounding some customers.

The news will be a blow to the device’s maker, Research In Motion (RIM), which has also experienced problems with the Bold’s successor, the Storm.

After initial enthusiasm about the look and feel of the device – it is RIM’s first full touchscreen phone – the Storm has faced a barrage of criticism because of a number of software glitches that make it painfully slow to execute certain tasks that other smartphones, such as Apple’s iPhone, carry out with ease.

Complaints include the phone’s built-in camera taking far too long to focus, poor sound quality and the overall slowness of the device. The problems were summed up succinctly by Stephen Fry, a self-confessed gadget freak. “Been playing with the BB Storm,” he wrote on the social-networking service Twitter. “Shockingly bad. I mean embarrassingly awful. Such a disappointment. Rushed out unfinished. What a pity. iPhone killer? Ha!”

The phone was produced in co-operation with Vodafone, which has exclusive rights to supply it to its customers. The mobile phone operator missed out on the exclusive deal to stock the iPhone in the US and the key European markets of the UK, France and Germany to bitter rivals AT&T, O2, Orange and T-Mobile, and is hoping the Storm will give it a much-needed boost in the fight for high-end gadget-obsessed customers.

But the Storm is proving a headache. Vodafone’s US joint venture, Verizon Wireless, has already been forced to issue a number of software patches for the device. The fact that the earlier device, the Bold, is still experiencing problems does not bode well for a swift turnaround in the fortunes of the Storm.

There is also talk that RIM is planning a touchscreen variant of the BlackBerry Bold with rumours that the phone – code-named Pluto – could be revealed in the first half of this year.

A spokesman for Orange refused to comment. RIM, meanwhile, produced a joint official statement saying: “The BlackBerry Bold 9000 smartphone is available to Orange customers both in-store and online via its website.”

RIM’s Blackberry smartphones always were bulky and brick like. It’s all because Blackberry is current leader for mobile email and they all have full hardware keyboard. But this new device is no ordinary Blackberry, this is first one made in flip form factor. Device looks more fashionable and stylish, but packs powerful Blackberry capabilities.

The new BlackBerry Pearl Flip provides power of a BlackBerry smartphone in a fun and familiar design. Phone has impressive Internet and multimedia capabilities, all in one powerful yet approachable smartphone. RIM promises that you can send a message to your friends or family, make a call, browse the web, snap a picture, watch a video or listen to your favorite song.
An enhanced HTML browser displays web pages in either “Column View” or “Page View” and different emulation settings allow users to choose between desktop-style HTML content and the mobile version of web pages. The browser also supports RTSP for watching online streaming video from sites like m.youtube.com. In addition, the BlackBerry Pearl Flip smartphone features built-in Wi-Fi® (802.11 b/g) with support for UMA (unlicensed mobile access), extending wireless email and data coverage and supporting carrier enabled voice calls over home Wi-Fi networks, enterprise wireless deployments and Wi-Fi hotspots.
